The North American Black Bear, or Ursus Americanus, is a medium-sized bear with females averaging
about 150 lbs and males between 300-350 lbs, though specimens over 600 lbs can be found.
Black bears often have a white, star-shaped mark on their chests, and ranges in color from black to brown, cinnamon, beige, and even pure white. A unique behavioral and physiological adaptation allows black bears to hibernate for as long as seven months when food is scarce. When active, they are omnivorous, feeding mostly on berries, acorns, succulent herbs, fish, carrion, and insects. When food is abundant, they may eat as much as 45 lb per day and gain up to 5 lb a day in preparation for winter. It is generally solitary, except during the breeding season, or in family groups of mother and young Newfoundland Black Bear Hunting | Canada Black Bear Bow Hunting | CA Big Game Hunting |
